As a Thumtack contractor we are very disappointed in the way their system works. They have no directory that the contractors are listed.I would have no problem with a annual fee. The consumer has to fill out something online and they submit it to us contractors thru email and the consumer ask for quotes. The consumer however does not know that the contractor gets charged for that. They have sent bad addresses,no screening on the consumer.I called in to try and get credits and they will not refund you, also they will try and tell you that you have to write a book about your business to receive a job from a consumer.

Reason of review: Poor customer service.

Monetary Loss: $500.

I hired a contractor to build a porch on a rental home in Warrior, AL through Thumtack and he did a terrible job didn't even use treated lumber, all he wanted was to get paid.

I have had my own issues with Thumbtack. I am on my second month using this as advertising.

My service has been in business for 4 years. Our price points are extremely competitive with others in this market. I have mostly noticed that 90% of the leads who actually respond have found someone cheaper. I have been in this industry for a long time and I know that our pricing beats our competitors.

I am not sure but I think we are in competition with individuals who are selling the same service but now as a real company or business so they are able to charge half of what we charge. If this is the case then I do think it is unfair and that thumbtack should require proof on LLC, or EIN Tax ID or something to keep us businesses out of competition with individuals.I'm going to continue to use Thumbtack because it is better and cheaper than Home Advisor but so far, I am not pleased with the outcome.

As a contractor I use Thumbtack too here in Maryland. While I have received a decent amount of work from the service, I have noticed things that might make one think the site is rigged against the contractor.

First the request for quotes seem to get more expensive as time goes on. The highest amount of credits for a potential job used to be 9 credits, now its 11. Also, I swear I have seen the same "consumers" requesting quotes over and over again. The job descriptions are vague at best and an 11 credit quote from 5 contractors only makes Thumbtack the real winner!

I would like to hear from other contractors about their experience with Thumbtack to compare stories. Like I said in the beginning, I have had some success with Thumbtack but I do feel like they are draining the pockets of contractors and may even be promoting dead leads to maintain business.

Its way better than Home Advisor or Angie's List, but it could definitely be a lot better as far as providing contractors with as much information as possible before they submit a quote. Also, there should be an indicator as to how often a customers has requested quotes for the same service so that contractors can avoid people who repeatedly seek quotes for the same job.
