Can't win a job at any price

I have a very reputable photography business with an outstanding website, if I do say so myself LOL. That said, you would think I would get at least an interest in my bids. Not so! There is no way to know if the person making the request is legit. I have submitted many bids, which cost me money, and there is absolutely nothing in return. Talk about a one way street. There should be a feedback mechanism for the client. A simple, how many times did they award a bid verses how many times the requested services. I have a few credits left, but will not be buying anymore unless Thumbtack fixes this very significant issue. It was a great idea, but I think it is over for me.

Amazing at supplying terrible leads!

Thumbtack will supply you with all the leads your willing to pay for! The quality of these leads are garbage. Customers can literally make a fake email address and ask for quotes in 5 seconds. Quotes that professionals need to PAY for in order to send. There is ZERO screening process for customers on thumbtack. Customers NEVER respond to quotes or any supplied contact information. They most always are just price shopping with zero intention of committing. They might all be robots made by ThumbTack itself, to make money. What a genius business model. Charge professionals a few dollars to send quotes to thin air. Money from nothing! I'm going to start using it to drive my competitors bankrupt.

I received many "leads" in just two days, after 2 years of absolutely nothing. Spent $6.66 responding to 2 leads, and they never called me.

I am a personality trainer offering $20 an hour, and no one responded to my quotes. All rubbish!

@PissedConsumer930539

I'm assuming you meant to say you're a personal trainer. You only sent out two quotes and you're giving Thumbtack a bad review?

Seriously? I'm a personal trainer and have been using Thumbtack for a year. I've had good luck signing clients and I charge $50 a session. The shorted period of time any client has signed on with me through Thumbtack has been 2 months.

I have a client right now I've been training for 6 months and I found them from a Thumbtack lead. Give it a little time. Have you ever worked in a gym as a trainer?

How many potential customers do you have to talk to before one signs up for training? Time.

Yea pretty much. That's what they do.

I have nothing but 4 and 5 star reviews. Something like 20 of them.

Then one customer complaint and before they even hear my side of what ACTUALLY was going on. Bam they closed my account.

The Nail or the Thumbtack

I signed up, and when I submitted my questions. I received an error message. It took me 40 minutes. And I lost all my information. Thumbtack, delivers late responses, and the bids have already been submitted, and so what did I get. Not a thing, in fact I asked them to delete my account for SMO Worldwide. Something is very strange about there tactics, maybe they were having a bad day. Their customer service reminds me of a cell phone carrier, where they are real nice, understanding and will tell you anything. To make a person happy, then you hang up, and see nothing has changed. Like I said...The Nail or the Thumbtack??? Nailed It!!!

Do not use Thumbtack

I had requested a cater for a private function and was given several different caters to select from. I specifically listed all details of the function. Number of guests, Times needed, and what type of menu we were looking for. I received several quotes and after viewing the quotes I selected Happy Chefs with a price of $300.00. After several emails a menu and details of the functions were sent. With one exception. Ummm. Most important factor which Chef Jay omitted was the confirmation of the total cost. Well after many requests I was finally given the cost of $30.00 per person. This was almost $600.00 more than his original quote. A true Bait and Switch tactic. BEWARE!!!!

Solicited for carpentry work for a garage cabinet installation. Received an INSTANT email indicating that "We do not allow requests that are: From a minor under 18, Not in English, Requesting bartered services, Requesting a full-time job or internship, Requesting an individual professional, Inappropriate or scammy". Mine were none of these and I was genuinely looking for a service. Thumbtack would do well to actually read their emails. Won't be using this website again, and will advise against others doing the same. No additional words are needed to make my point. No additional words are needed to make my point. Review from Pontiac, Michigan

Thumbtack isn't worth trying as a professional. It's not balanced. The consumer has all the power and most often they don't take it seriously because it's free as a consumer. As a professional you're paying thumbtack for constant disappointment. I used the site for over a month and I put in hundreds of dollars to buy their credits and I only landed one job. When I had a problem with a consumer thumbtack %100 backed them and couldn't help me one bit. DONT USE THIS SITE! You will be disappointed.

I have some insight for you. There is a facebook page if you search Thumbtack Complaints that you should post this on as well.

We also suggest Sidejobr sicne they do not charge any lead fees or credits. just honest to goodness willing to connect businesses with shippers.

Thumbtack is a scam folks!

Every day I get at least three or four new "leads" to bid on. So many, in fact that I've started noticing the same names being used for different events (I'm a wedding DJ). When I received a quote request for an outdoor wedding in Eastern Washington that was supposed to take place in FEBRUARY, I knew for sure that it was a scam... most likely being run by Nigerians or Indians who don't know anything about our climate that time of year. Another big clue is most bids are incomplete - ie people requesting service but no equipment... A wedding DJ for 300 people, but no sound or lights. Really? Okay then.

Fake client Requests!!!!

I am a professional Photographer on thumbtack I send a lot of quotes and thumbtack says at least 2-4 other quotes are sent along with mine to "potential clients"! I even facebook the "potential clients" and only 2 or 3 of the people were searchable! I feel like I am being scammed! I'm actually getting married myself and listed a photography request on thumbtack. I received the request in my professional dashboard but have not received one quote. I find it odd that I respond to 4 out of 5 request and its telling me that 2-4 other professionals are quoting EVERY TIME and when I tried to post the exact same request not one quote!! I have given your company $100's of dollars at this point for sending quotes and I believe you are not fulfilling your end of this agreement. You are basically robbing me to support your clearly fake company. I will be curious to see the response to this email if there is one....

I have used Thumbtack for about 5 months as a landscaping and snow removal contractor in MN. It has honestly saved my business and allowed me to keep a few guys employed all spring/summer.

To date I have spent ~$1000 in bid fees and received about $20K in work. That is a great return, but I do believe there are fake requests. The reason I believe that is because my contact rate vs. sign up rate is exceptional, so I cannot believe the hundreds of requests I bid on never even get looked at.

I present a great bid with before/after photos of previous jobs, and it is very professional. Also, we are up to 43 reviews in only 5 months with only 3 being less than stellar.

On a few occasions I have told Thumbtack that I believe some of their reviews are fake. They take it well but always insist that is not the case.

Also, the fact that they refund bids that are not looked at within 48 hours is a good thing. I get lots of those.

@PissedConsumer1041975

Most of the "leads" you get are probably a combination of two things. #1 price shoppers with no intention of hiring anyone #2 Your competition checking to see what your rates are.

Reviews posted to your thumbtack profile can be written by anyone, the family dog, your neighbor Fred, even you can write one. The review process is a total joke, zero checks and balances and a terrible support system via Thumbtack if a frivolous review is left.

#978553

I've been hired 16 times since November, and each client takes courses with me paying on average $100-200 each month, so Thumbtack has been amazing. Some quotes are obviously fake-- I even did a quote to see what other people in my business are doing-- but it's been working for me. The key is to stick with it, get good reviews and "hires" and keep tabs on what works and what doesn't in regards to hiring (in terms of client location, requests, what I write to a client the first time, etc...)

#966829

I kinda picked up on it about the credit thing... there going to get there money regardless up front.

... I think it's bogus.

.. made up...

#916170

The same exact thing happened to me, I submitted a request and no one responded, but it show up on my requests list. Said that several other Photographers had submitted quotes and I hadn't received any.

#917256
@PissedConsumer916170

I'm a recording and audio video post production studio owner. I have the same issues.

I did get one *** with a video editing job. The guy wanted a 5 min video cut from his home video camera footage with some VO and music. Very simple and I even spoke with him on the phone. However he posted the request on the day before thanksgiving and needed it for Sunday.

We agreed to meet on Saturday so he could give me the media. He didn't show up or call or return my calls.

The real problem is the rookie nature of the site and how there is no real screening and the slimmed down mobile requests don't provide enough questions that a real client needs to be able to answer and more importantly are they ready to record their music yet or is their deadline and budget realistic.

You can things done cheap, fast and done well but only two out of those three for a job.

These guys are scammers!

I'm a professional has a reputable business with 2 shop/retail locations. I submit lowball competitive rates to the several quotes that I'm sent from Thumbtack. For the past 3 months on every request I asks the hirer for additional info, in which mostly is basic stuff like "what brand is the computer", what "color cords" etc., and I have NEVER got one response with the basic responses nor have I ever been hired from Thumbtack. SCAm site that are taking honest hard earned money from professionals. This place needs to be shutdown and all pros who don't make money should be refunded. I believe a class action suit should be explorer!

Sorry that you had such a bad experience! I believe it's stories like yours that have jaded thumbtack for the REAL businesses which choose to sign on with them.

I have invested a lot of money receiving " leads " from them and have yet to be hired which is why I was checking the complaints section. Wow is all I can say!

Thumbtack Uses False Enticement.

Thanks to all of you for writing these reviews on Thumbtack. It sure sounded like a scam. So thank God I didn't pay any money or complete any work. If we all think about it 2x, it should be clear that this money is going straight into the pocket of those who set up this phony thumbtack gig. Before long, enough people will get ripped and the FTC will come swooping down. How many times has this happened before? Far too many to count. But by the time this happens, millions if not thousand would have already been scammed. It won't happen to me since I've already unsubscribed after 2 days.
