Limited information

We've had some pretty good success with Thumbtack. We've made more money that we've spent with them on quotes, but I send a lot of quotes out that seem to go nowhere. I'd love to see feedback from the customers as to why they went with a different company.

I don't mind not getting jobs, that is part of business. However I'm concerned that often I'm paying money to send quotes to people that aren't really interested in the first place.

I've seen instances where other area photographers have submitted requests to Thumbtack to see what others in the area are charging for similar services.

We had one instance where it seemed like some guy just wanted to see our boudoir portfolio. After talking with him, it became clear he wasn't interested in paying money, just looking for others private images.

I have only been on Thumbtack since Sept. but I have more work than I can do by myself now.

Thumbtack works if you work with it and contact your customers, send quotes that interest your client so they want to call you.

Send pics of your work and invite client to meet with you.

Thumbtack works when you work too.

Hoa Kxh

The situation you mention about the customer and the boudoir photographs sounds concerning. This is something we'd like the get the details about.

You're welcome to call us at 1-800-343-1710.

I also recommend calling so we can submit the feedback you have about our site to the product team, like your suggestion about asking for customer feedback and making it available to professionals.

We'd appreciate hearing any other suggestions you think of and having the opportunity to help you with your concerns.

Bad contractor

I used Thumbtack to find a contractor for painting, and replacing damage facial boards, and replacing my roof. The contractor claimed that my home was painted and repaired and asked for more money.

When I got home I inspected my home and the little work that he did was what a 2 year old would do. I asked the contractor meet me about the poor work, he said ok. The next day the contractor never came. I have to call him many times before he would call back.

He finally said the work was unacceptable and would take care of it. That was the last day I was able to talk to him. He never came back and would not provide me with an itemized bill for the work. I called Thumbtack for help with the contractor that the advertised on their web site.

I talked to two of their reps and explained my problem, both said that it was impossible to Vet all the contractors. So what the means is that if they sign up and pay Thumbtack will allow them to use their site. I would note recommend this site to find a contractor.

I have been taken for a lot of money with no help from Thumbtack to recover my losses!!!

My friend used thumtack and the whole experience was a nightmare. Everything has to be redone plus the contractor broke so many things that was not part of the job because he was so negligent

and rushing.

I interviewed a gutter cleaner recommended by thumtack and when I googled him it turned out he was a convicted felon who spent 2 years in prison for something to do with guns. Thumtack does not vet their people at all.

Were you by chance one of those cheapskates that wanted $10k worth of work for $500? There are no shortage of idiots like that.

Guest

PLEASE POST The NAME of the contractor. I did.

If it is the truth then you have nothing to fear.

Hoa Kxh

That sounds like such a stressful experience to endure, and I’m sorry that you had to go through that. I understand that you’ve previously called in and spoke to two of our reps.

However, I encourage you to reach out to our Marketplace Integrity team at (800) 343-1710. They’re trained to handle these kind of delicate situations and help each party come to a resolution.

We’re always here to help both customers and professionals, so let us know if we can do anything else to assist you.

On thumbtack they have a list of reviews that customers can put. Did you read the reviews.

Also thumbtack has it where you can look at a contractors profile. The profile has all the contractors info. How many clients he has or you can even check to see if the contractor is licensed. Did you check?

Did you do your research on that contractor? Don't blame someone else for your mistake.

Thumbtack Quote Review from New York, New York

I am going through the same experience. I am very experienced, and skilled...spending tons of money on thumbtack, have great profile and 5 star reviews and %95 of my quotes are only viewed without checking the profiles. I am not sure what is going on. I kept asking the staff why they don't ask the approx budget that these clients are willing to spend on a job. They keep coming up with excuses that they are going to discuss that with other team members but they never add that to their questionaires. I came to understand using Thumbtack is like playing jackpot and is damaging the value of my work.

Yep! Dont worry,Thumbtack is making their money, regardless of your success listing and quoting bids.

Every time a request for bid comes across your screen, 5 businesses, all hoping to get the job, spent $7 -10.

Great system really. You'll never know who ,if anyone got the job..

You got that right. It's a waist of time and money. It's great for thumbtack and not us independent contractors.

Thumbtack SCAM!

So I own a catering company, i have been using thumbtack for 3 months out of those 3 months i have sent 77 Quotes and hired 3 times of those 77, this weekend i filled out a quote request using thumbtacks web site, put in all the information as if i was a client looking to book an event using the same zip code as my business on thumbtack and come to find i as my business did not get an alert to bid my own event! I got 3 Quotes from companies that were over 40 miles away from me to drop off food and 2 of them were not even the type of food i was looking for. Unless you like to waste money find another way to get customers this site is a joke!

Read the thumbtack methods. They have a computer double check just to *** out pros who request services that are the same as the service they offer!!

Guest

read your terms of service on their website. Speaks volumes on their real business practices.

They don't care no matter what spin they use. They only want you to pay for credits.

Hoa Kxh

We value honesty and transparency in our system, and we do not want anyone to submit fake requests or reviews. This is why professionals are blocked from submitting requests through their account for the same type of service they offer.

We also have systems in place to discourage fake reviews. We understand that you wanted to check things out for yourself, but we’d appreciate it if you contacted us so we can refund the professionals that quoted on your request since you weren’t really looking for the service. We can also look into why you didn’t receive the request you sent.

Since professionals can pick and choose which requests they want to quote on, we trust that pros are only quoting on jobs that they can do.

We want all pros to make the most out of their time and money on our site, and we’re here to help you find the strategy that'll work best for your business. Feel free to reach out to us at 1-800-343-1710.

We’re here for you.

I am having the same problems. I quote jobs but never get them.

I received a call from a lady claiming to be a mentor for new companies signed up. She advised me the only way to get booked is to have people write reviews who have used the service . how can you write a review if your never booked. She told me to have people make them up.

I see that as bad business ethics.

If you are looking for a creditable site for leads check out GIGSALAD.com. I have booked over 4500 in 1 -2 weeks with them great site

SCAM!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I joined Thumbtack a few months ago. As soon as I joined, I was inundated with potential jobs and, guess what - the very first one was a ***! I communicated with the client, arranged where and when I'd be there, and was all set to do the job. Three days later, hours before the job, she cancelled. Lots of apologies, arranged to reschedule, then...nothing. Same with another job. Cancelled at the very last minute. The ONE client I worked for still hasn't paid me in full, three months later. And the rest? Very reasonable quotes offered for jobs, very reasonable requests from people to chat about their needs...and NOTHING. This company is without a shadow of a doubt a SCAM and should not be trusted. Do not give them your money as it will be going down the drain.

I understand how frustrating it would be to have jobs fall through. It’s definitely not the experience we want for professionals.

I can assure you we are not in the business of scamming pros; the requests on our site come from real and interested customers. It matters to us that customer requests turn into real work for professionals, and we’re here to help you find the success you’re looking for.

When it comes to being hired through online sites, communication is important. Sending a short and friendly message after the initial quote reminding the customer that you’re still interested is a good practice, and it has helped professionals in the past. We’d love to discuss your concerns more, and give you custom feedback on your profile and quote message.

You can contact us at 800-343-1710. We’re looking forward to hearing from you!

Wow, you have had some bad luck. I'm a bartender on thumbtack and I have run into similar circumstances but certainly not as bad as to regard to the customers reliability.

I don't think that is a factor resulting from Thumbtack as it is a problem with people not knowing what the *** they want. Add in some rudeness and yeah, it can suck.

In regard to getting "Very reasonable quotes offered for jobs, very reasonable requests from people to chat about their needs...and NOTHING", did you attempt to write them back or click on hire? I just can't see that happening.

It's very competitive in regard to what I do and I can't ever see myself not responding in some way...even if they haven't viewed the quote!

As far as the money thing, I collect on the same day/night as the day of services so I don't understand why you haven't been paid unless you're providing a service that's ongoing (like contracting).

Good luck in the future though!

Same history overhere, i have to buy coins in order to submit my quotes, ou get on the phone talking about their needs, schedules and expectation. When you had plan your week accordingly, a few minutes before your appointment, you get a txt tell you the appr is canecelled and need to be reschedule.

Then you dont hear from them anymore. So probably, you expend 37 a week just to submit quotes but dont get any real deal.

Bad for consumers and vendors alike

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Thumbtack is a strange place: consumers can't see vendors until they want to bid on your request. So, the vendors have to PAY for every consumer to even "kick a tire" and see who they are, what their business is like, and get a quote. I've used this as a business owner, and also as a consumer. I've got to say, the other reviews are spot-on: it's a waste of money for vendors. Additionally, I've tried hiring other vendors (landscapers, contractors, the like) and it's like the bottom-of-the-barrel for some types of businesses. Truly, some of them seem to be startups, basement-businesses, or people who have bad business plans. Sad. My advice: keep looking for other vendors who pay for other types of advertising.

I understand your concerns, and you're right that customers don't see a professional's information until that pro sends them a quote. Since professionals are paying to quote, we limit the competition and also make it less overwhelming for customers.

Our site is a new way for professionals to advertise directly to customers that are already looking for their type of service, and we're here to help pros present themselves in the best way possible.

I'm sorry the professionals that quoted on your requests were not the right fit for you.

If you'd like to call us at 1-800-343-1710, we'd be happy to go over your concerns with you and help you in any way we can.

Calling Thumbtack is a waste of time. Thumbtack knows this service is poorly structured.

Legitimate service providers cannot get work through this site because when customers that do exist are often bottom feeders that look for a cheap price without worrying about service. There are too many horror stories from both providers and consumers, so Thumbtack is aware of the problems.

If you wanted to do something about them, other than damage control, you would. Clearly you do not.

Beware contractors. With over 135 hires in 3 years and 65, 4and 5 star reviews might I add. I get 1 complaint from one of those know matter what you do the client will never be happy. Let's do math, out of 100 satisfied people .3% bitched and they drop me. I come to find out that's breach of contract bc they have to give a 30 day written notice. Also I asked to unblock my account for and hour or please give me MY customers contact info, they say NO. Well in THERE contract they have to give me the option to pay $50 and get my clinet list. Oh and this is the best part. While one part of the company has me holding my anklesi get a call from a different department wanting me to be a Thumbtack Pro bc he says " your the type of honest contractor Thumbtack wishes they had a 1000. Would you please tell your story. What a horrible business plan they train these minions to do when you call in. Ya that you Alex whoever. Thumbtack is a ripoff

Thumbtack charges you for bogus "leads" that go nowhere. I have a very successful pro band and all the leads we paid for were for people that had no money, want you to work for free, or for nonexistent events. They do nothing to verify the people who place the ads. Don't waste your money. Thumbtack is a big ripoff. We even emailed and talked to them about putting up some kind of advisory so there would not be so much fraud. They don't care. I have seen a few other internet companies that operate on the same "pay per lead" principle and none of them ever work. Most went out of business within two years.

I can totally understand your frustrations; I’m really glad you’ve posted here so I can help you out and address these concerns of yours. Sometimes customers are unaware of what a band costs and how much goes into a gig.

Breaking down everything that is included in your price will really help the customer know what they’ll get for their money.

We try to make sure requests are from customers that are ready to hire, and requests go through our verification system. We understand that we can always improve, and we always encourage pros to call us if they see a request they’re unsure about.

We certainly do care about professionals and customers alike.

We’ve been supporting pros in growing their business for 7 years and we have a world-class support team you can always reach out to. They're trained to effectively teach pros how to get the most out of our site and they can help you out with anything you need.

It's a bottomless money pit!

Don't waste your time or money on these so called potential clients unless you are willing to for for almost nothing. People that go to ThumbJACK are broke *** losers and Thumbtack doesn't even make a client give a number. There is no accountability, low quality, poor customer service, high fees and a total scam and rip off! I suggest trying any other service besides this one. Thanks for reaching out to us with your concerns. I can definitely understand why you’d be frustrated with not being able to call a customer after you’ve reached out to them with your quote.

Sometimes customers can feel intimidated giving their personal contact information and hiring a stranger through an online source. Because of this, we encourage our pros to send follow-up messages to customers once their quote has been viewed, which serves as another reminder that they have pros waiting for their response.

We’re here to help both our professionals and customers understand how our site works and help them get the most out of it. We have an awesome resource center on our site specifically for our pros that giving coaching advice on how to use our service effectively. These resources are available to our professionals at anytime in our Pro Center, and they’re there to ultimately help improve each pro’s experience.

Our site is a place that customers can come to when they need to hire any sort of pro: from house cleaners, to movers, and even to massage therapists.

We take pride in what sets us apart from other forms of advertising, and we understand that each professional must do what they feel is best for their business. If you decide to give us another chance, remember that we’ll always be here to help you.

2 Malicious Slanderous Client Reviews and I was deleted without proper consideration

GOD, In The Name Of Jesus PLEASE BE MERCIFUL and just quickly BLOW UP PLANET EARTH instead of 7 year's of the worst tribulation humanity has ever experienced.... There aren't enough humans with a pure heart to justify saving a planet you can easily replace elsewhere with "good" humans! Thank you. Thumbtack unfairly deleting my professional profile based on 2 clients that maliciously lied and slandered a VERY HONEST and VERY HARD WORKING person is WRONG ON TOO MANY LEVELS! It violates the U.S. Constitution that you are INNOCENT until proven guilty... Thumbtack is just another example of a company practicing sociopathic capitalism and playing judge without due process, and THE PURE OF HEART and THE HONEST and THE INNOCENT has SEALED HUMANITY's AND PLANET EARTH's FATE. Sorry.... It is just too late to fix this wretched planet and its wretched people and its wretched practices.... PLANET EARTH's PEOPLE ARE TOO FAR GONE MORALLY TO SAVE... Free Will lack of conscience and hardly any sense of fairness in most humans.... Very narcissistic societies.... People are so very self-centered....

I have also experienced unfair behavior from thumbtack support. I have the same situation with a customer here in ohio whom has slandered our company beyond belief on every media sight they could find with our name attached.

A negative review was placed on thumbtack by the customer and a second negative review was placed by her spouse the next day. When i contacted thumbtack about the issue they stated it was under review. After almost 2 weeks with no response at all i contacted them yet again simply to be told that mine was a unique situation but was being reviewed. What kind of *** is that?

In what world is it feasable for a business to be slandered repeatedly by a consumer and allowed to post even more reviews to the same sight. Unacceptable

Thumbtack Occupying 4 - 6 Irrelevant First Page Search Results On Google???

I don't know what has been going on with Google's search results for about the past year, but it has become completely unfair and unbalanced and I can't even begin to fathom why Google would be allowing this to go on since their whole motto revolves around providing the most relevant search results possible . No matter what search terms you use for my niche, Thumbtack.com (which was supposedly penalized for buying links) will occupy anywhere between 4 and 6 of the first page search results and all, but 1 of those results will be completely irrelevant. Additionally, every one of their page titles are identical and there is no unique content whatsoever on any of the pages other than user created profiles. I know first hand that this website and every other one like it basically forces vendors to place a one way link to them in order to create a profile on their website. So, as far as i'm concerned, their page rank was boosted by unfair means, which break Google's rules. I also highly suspect that the "leads" being generated by Thumbtack (which they charge vendors money for) are fictitious. I have a VERY professional and competitive website in my niche and I have NEVER received a response from one, single lead I have ever paid for on this site! The other part of this is, it's not just Thumbtack. They are occupying 4 - 6 first page search results and then there are GigMasters and GigSalad occupying 2 - 3 of the first page search results each as well! First of all, both of those websites are owned by the same company and as far as i'm concerned are duplicate content. So, these 3 websites alone are occupying between 8 and 10 of Google's first page search results for just about every possible search term for my niche and completely dominating the market. Add to all of this the long list of paid Google ads and local business results, which occupy the whole screen before a user even scrolls clear down to the actual organic search results and it has basically made internet marketing impossible... How are these websites able to do this and why is Google allowing it to go on? I mean, isn't ONE first page search result per domain good enough??? There are definitely some shady things going on here!
