Hired a Scam Artist

Please be aware that a company called Thumbtack may approach you to provide professional services through Craigslist. They do not check credentials of the supposed tradesmen. I unfortunately hired a referral from them, and basically was scammed by a company called Silver Buckle Construction. He came to repair a breach in my fence, and it fell down 2 weeks later. When I tried to resolve the matter, he stood me up 5 times to fix it. He gave one excuse after another, (one was that he was in jail for a week). He did not respond to texts, his number changed, and he did not respond to voicemails. When I filed a complaint with Thumbtack, I was told his profile has been removed, and I was on my own. I am disabled and a senior citizen, and could not afford this rip-off.

I agree with you. I am greatly disappointed with the quality of the client and consider Thumbtack's screening process broken.

Not a scam but I would not say it is a good thing to use

First I want to say I don’t think Thumbtack is a scam but if you are trying to promote your business I would say it is not worth going through thumbtack to do it. I moved back to my hometown so I wanted to find an easy way to get my name back out there. I am a mobile DJ and have been so for over 20 years. I went through all of things thumbtack wanted me to do to promote my business (videos, pictures, past clients posted reviews for me) . So once I got my page in order I purchased close to $110.00 worth of credit over the past two months. Not saying all the leads were false but I think the majority of them were. I did some testing. I lowered my price from 400.00 to as low as 175 for a whole party and only got two responses. My opinion is thumbtack is legit but the people who use thumbtack are either spamers or people looking to get quality work for nothing. I basically wasted $110. Over a two month period is not that bad but it is still money wasted. Here is what I would do guys (which I plan on sticking to). When I started back DJing, I got my own website through Vistaprint. It only cost me 16 or 17 dollars a month. Make sure you put things on your website that promotes your business to the fullest. If you want (which is what I did for three months), you can pay extra money to get your website put closer to the front page of any search engine. The more people check out your site the higher ranking it will get of course:). I began to average two parties a month when I did that which easily paid for my website. I could have done more but this is a hobby more for me with a fulltime job and family. With having your own website you will get more customers that are legit and you don’t have to pay to put a bid in. They already know what you charge so if it is too much for them they can go to the next DJ. I am sure with thumbtack, you also have DJs who just want to do a party and may not have top of the line equipment that will underbid you like crazy. I have turned my website back on and I plan on going that route. Hope this was not too long but I wanted to give you my honest opinion.

Wait, you get fake leads, and you say they're not a scam? Come on.

@PissedConsumer863770

Well thumbtack can't prevent people from putting in fake leads. How can you really monitor that.

Actually after I posted my message I got a few gigs from thumbtack. I still say do your own website but try to screen the leads yourself

Wasted My Time & Money

I operate my own mobile dj company in Greenville SC. A friend found this company online and sent me the link. I was impressed with the way it looked and navigated. Quickly signed up my company in their database and even bought their $35 credits so I could participate. All is fine, until I notice that NO ONE responds. The moment you pay, you receive several leads a day. So this kept me busy for a week, just sitting at my desk writing up custom quotes to all the leads I was receiving. I was very excited at first. Eventually, I suspected fraud, because I'm a very marketable and talented dj. So I did a series of extreme under bidding, $250 to $350 dj responses to several leads. Still no reply. MAYBE: Maybe they are sending out a few, a handful of real leads. But I'm certain that they generate fake leads just to tease the vendor into paying for the quotes. TRUE BUSINESS GOAL: The real bottom line for a vendor is to have the clients click through to their website. Like placing an ad in newspaper, the newspaper doesn't sell your product, they just share your name to the audience. So in the end, if the client clicks your website and still doesn't buy your product then it's the vendors fault. But thumbtack doesn't even get real clients, they create fake leads.

Thanks for your review. I noticed the same pattern when I had an account with Thumbtack.

As soon as I bought a package of credits, I started getting leads like crazy (which is highly unusual in my profession).

When the credits were used up and I didn't purchase more, suddenly the leads dried up to nothing. I hardly think it was a coincidence.

Holy Cow, how are they still in business???

They Will find out a way to separate you(a business owner) from your hard -earned dollars. Thats what they do, and they do it like no one else I have ever seen!

I tried this service, which I actually believe is a wonderful concept, but turned out to be a Highly Qualified Waste of Time. I was always suspicious about THUMBTACK. They are professionals at getting your hard earned dollars and use classic bad business practices on many levels to do it. There is great thought behind this SCAM company. I was contacted about a lead for someone spilling water in their Macintosh Computer(twice) - and I charge half of what apple charges. Never heard back from anyone with a highly competitive price. SO BAD ON SO MANY LEVELS. NEVER HEARD BACK FROM ANY LEADS OVER A SPAN OF 4 -5 MONTHS. They really need to be investigated by the attorney general of their State. Do yourself a favor, and don't even bother playing their "bait and switch" games.

Avoid Thumbtack at all costs !!!!

Thumbtack, without a doubt is the worst functioning internet company on planet earth. I have given my last cent to this corrupt and slimy operation. I will save you the time, money and effort of doing business with them. First of all IT IS NOT FREE !!!!!! if you are a service provider you have to pay to respond to the leads they send you. A huge majority of the leads are worthless, they lack information and detail. Bottom line is most customers are just price shopping and have no idea it costs us money to communicate with them. My biggest suspicion is probably true and that is that most of the leads are phony. People will dispute this (thumbtack will for sure) but how many of you have ever met or seen someone with the first name "Khristeena" Or how about "Tharesa" ? Thats just two of of dozens of strangely spelled first names I have seen. (leads I have gotten) Thumbtack refuses to listen to any advice the service providers give them. You can simply go to their Facebook page and read the onslaught of complaints (keep in mind the delete them constantly) thumbtack I cannot wait until you are sued.

OMG I was saying the same thing about the names they are BOGUS.

#854465

I have to agree with this poster regarding the names of quote requesters.

I once received a lead from a "person" whose "name" started with an O and then 9 consonants.

It looked liked someone's cat had walked across their keyboard. And when I sent a complaint to Thumbtack, I received no reply.

I am a freelance Videographer. As a rule I do not do weddings or music videos.

(Too much work, too little money.) I have informed Thumbtack of this and requested that I NOT be sent these leads. Yet that is 90% of the leads I continue to receive.

Bogus Quotes

Seems from what I have seen and heard from others based on the way Thumbtack Works.. it's really ripping off the professionals using it. #1 They give you credits for completing things on their page, but you never see the credits and you can't use them for anything, you still have to buy credits. Thumbtack thanked me for all I filled out and said I have 92 credits, but they can't be used for replying to a quote. #2 Seems many of the quotes are bogus. 5 pros can reply to the quotes. The last one I did was $9.99 to quote (let's say $10 to make life easy).. so 5 people reply at $10 = $50 for Thumbtack, then the fake person opens all 5 and cancels the project = Thumbtack does not refund if the quote is opened. = $50 for Thumbtack. Let's say they do that in 200 cities a day = $10,000 per day in their pocket for faking out professionals. Until they block this loophole, I suggest staying clear.

Thumbtack is awesome. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know their industry/market or has zero ability to communicate to potential clients/customers in a compelling fashion. If no one is biting you're charging too much. *** "The fault dear Brutus is not In our stars, but in ourselves."

I have sent out 100's of bids...I've been hired roughly 12 times. When and if someone isn't completely rude in response to a truly professional statement...they will react with anger.

For example...a flat panel installation from Best Buy is 250.00 without any audio system, remote programming etc. I will bid 225 to 250 dollars. I have been told by several people they have someone who offered to do the work for 100 to 140 dollars.

No offense but breaking less than even when paying for a vehicle, licenses, insurance, fuel is not worth. Thumbtack seems to be a ton of crackheads posing as professionals.

#891778

"Charging to much *** you say. hhmm or is it that people are working for nearly free? Your fake because if you wasn't your ignorant self wouldn't be on this site trying to insult people who have REAL stories.

#860744

I think anyone dumb enough to associate Julius Caesar with a business is more priceless than any retort I could come up with.

Thumbtack is 95% scam. (Happy with that evaluation?) So is care.com, wyzant.com, and a host of other freelancing sites.

I can't believe the government or a watchdog group hasn't started to crack down on these guys. People have to get more than pissed about it, and go to the media, the BBB, and write their Congresspeople.

#848660

What a coincidence that you didn't write any actual DETAILS in your review about why you think Thumbtack is so great! As far as rates go, experienced professionals know what a realistic fee is.

I guess you ignored the reviews posted by other users claiming they intentionally underbid and they still didn't get the job. I wouldn't be surprised if you're employed by Thumbtack.

Just because you have had success with them does not mean its legit. Its such typical American behavior to assume everything is perfect because you haven't been burned (yet) If you saw the pages of evidence I have PROVING thumbtack is a dishonest/fraudulent company you would fall over.

I doubt you will pay attention to this so instead how about researching things a bit ? Google search "thumbtack scam" or "thumbtack rip off"

Thumbtack was a good thing until it changed its format. Now, vendors who pay into the service are being ripped off.

They don't even have the choice as to which potential customers they make contact with.

They pay much higher premiums for receiving non-qualified leads. If looking to expose your business, look elsewhere.

Thumbtack is NOT a SCAM

I spent $4000 in 2 years on 2 1/2 page full color phone book ads. Tracking included. Failed to get 1 call. Using the logic here, that makes the phone book a scam. Maybe they didn't send the books out? 99% of the complaints come from the photographer/wedding industry. Zero credentials are needed to be a photographer or DJ. Therefore, you are subject to competiton from any kid with a laptop. A lead service that advertises on competeing quotes gets people looking for a bargain. Therefore, in a cutthroat industry like that, assuming the leads are fake because you didn't get a sale is ridiculous. Is it possible that A. You don't know your market as well as you think? B. Your profile/ personal website are not very good? C. MAybe thumbtack just isn't for you industry in your area? D. Bad economy. Can you compete with a kid who will shoot an entire multiple location wedding over 5 hours for $300 (because that happens now..) Thumbtack works for me, and many others. Try it. If "blowing" $100, $200, or less..(as I have read complaints about "wasting $40") is killing you, maybe owning a business isn't for you. It feels good to blame thumbtack as a "scam", but considering most of the complaints come from a certain industry, maybe that industry is just overpopulated in your area. Part of owning a company is knowing your market. Having the best food won't make you rich if you open in a neighborhood with 20 other restaurants and no foot traffic. In fact, the few reviews I read that posted info about the reviewer (linked to their site), I thought both the review itself and the site were poorly written and would not get a call from me. TL: DR....MAYBE IT"S YOU Advertising is all jumbled right now. Phone books died. 50% have android. 50% have I phones. Google has a virtual Search monoploly.

So how do you explain an email saying a quote was viewed that was never viewed? Go some where else with your lies.

#854470

I agree about the "poorly written" website or profile.

Just read some of these posted complaints!

Poor grammar, poor English, spelling errors, no punctuation.

If you can't take the time to present yourself properly, display a lack of attention to detail, then why would someone spend their hard earned money with you?

#848991

I guess you didn't bother to actually read those reviews. If you did, you would know the complaints are not all about losing money.

They are about Thumbtack's deceptive business practices, such as NOT TELLING PEOPLE UP FRONT THAT THERE IS A FEE!!!

They advertise as a FREE website.

At least when you advertise in the Yellow Pages or anywhere else, you know ahead of time how much you will be charged. They don't wait for you to post an ad and tell you after the fact how much it costs. What's more, consumers who browse through the Yellow Pages, or any other ads, are aware that someone is paying for that ad. That is not the case with Thumbtack.

Potential clients have no idea that it costs money to respond to their requests. This tactic is unfair for both parties.

I don't blame anyone for complaining about it. I'm surprised Thumbtack hasn't yet been sued for their misleading advertising practices.

#891764
@scarletletters

I agree and anyone who is on their side I wouldn't trust just like I don't trust their website.

No jobs yet

I am a professional photographer and have been with Thumbtack for about a month now. I have received many leads, but it has not lead to any jobs yet. Thankfully I have not lost any money as I earned some free credits for trying out this service. But you would think that after a month I would hear from someone? But no, no one has contacted me. After reading these complaints I realize that what I suspected all along was true: Most of these leads are fakes. Or they are from people who don't really want to hire anyone in the first place!

My Good friend is a wedding photographer. It is hard all around right now.

ANYONE with a $300 digital camera and a laptop can be a photographer. Many people do not care about the quality from a real shoot. In fact, he went back to camera op for the local news because his freelance business dried up so much. Can you compete with a kid who will shoot an entire 5 hour multiple location wedding and give the whole shoot on a cd for free for a total of $300?

That is what we just paid a girl in CT that my wife knows. She did a good job too. MAybe it's just that technology has weakened your industry a ton. I noticed that 90% of thumbtack complaints are photographers and DJ's.

Both luxury services. Both need zero training credentials to legally do. Both can be "done" with average equipment that is ubiquitous. The average consumer doesn't know the difference between your dual DSLR setup with multiple lenses and lighting equip, and the kid with a nice point and shoot and Adobe editor.

They do however know the difference in price.

I do pest control. Spent $30 on thumbtack, made over $1000.

Definitely NOT a scam. It seems your field is just very hard to sell rigt now.

#1012709
@PissedConsumer835347

I am a DJ, part time and have had great luck with Thumbtack! I spent about $150 on credits, and had earnings of over $1200 from gigs.

Yes, there is a LOT of competition in a LOT of services, like photographers and DJ's, and we do not need any so called "legal" licenses, or whatever. Prices of Dj's run from $100 and a few drinks and a dinner, to THOUSANDS of $$, esp. in the wedding market. Some people think they have to pay this rediculous price.

Not true. Most requests I get have budgets between $400 and $500, for non-weddings. Weddings, $800-$900--again, because they think they have to pay that. Competition is fierce.

People want a REASONABLE price, with high quality, and many people

get just that. And of course, LUCK has a part to play in getting hired for any business.

Thumbtack is NOT a scam.
