Thumbtack
Reviews and Complaints
No good
No Longer a Viable Solution
THUMBTACK PROFESSIONALS PLEASE BEWARE!!! Any Pros using Thumbtack really need to reconsider using them.
They have made several changes that make you spend more money with the now unlikely chance that you will win a bid. This new feature they call Instant Quote for example sends your quote all over the United States and you pay for any quote that is opened by a customer. It will state there are 35 Request....the request come from everywhere. People are naturally curious so they open every quote they get!
Imagine if 25 of those people open your quote and each one is $11.69. I have had success with Thumbtack in the past, but it is no longer a viable way to get customers.

Waste of time and money
There isn't a good way to make money on this website as a photographer. You can get lucky and hit a few shoots that'll make you money, but you'll end up spending the same in bidding for the quotes or paying more than you made.
Their model is this; you send a quote or have it automatically setup to send and if they customer replies in any way...
you pay for the quote, which could be from $5-$50.
This adds up really quick and most of the time you just get people that are trying to get a better idea of what's offered or trying to field the market and see if they can find a better price. You usually end up on the losing end of this model, thumbtack doesn't really care at all, they're making money on it and aren't going to change anytime soon.
Also, it's really skeptical when all they have to do is have a team of people asking bland questions to your quotes to create a payday for themselves.
New Background Check System
Received email notice of a potential client by email. Submitted bid.
My account was IMMEDIATELY disabled, zero grace period because they have a new policy that requires pros to submit to a background check through Checkr. Even those of us who have been on Thumbtack for YEARS. Contacting Thumbtack does not resolve. They will NOT reactivate account until background check is complete, despite pros having no way to communicate with their clients who they have bid on, or worse, who have already contracted service.
But they took the money for the bid that I placed. I imagine that if the client wants to accept the bid, they will get notice that the account is deactivated.
Absolutely outrageous, and possibly illegal action. I am in contact with my attorney.
